After 40 years at North Dakota State University, Larry R. Peterson retired in 2016 as Professor Emeritus of History, Philosophy, and Religious Studies. He graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1965, earned his B.A. in English from Moorhead State University in 1970 and his Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Minnesota in 1978. He chaired the NDSU History Department from 1989-2006, and subsequently served as the Director of Accreditation and Assessment and the Interim Dean of the Libraries. In addition to creating history courses on women in America, families in America, and race in the United States, he was active in general education, anti-racism organizing, gay rights, and women's studies. He is currently coordinating the Red River Rainbow Seniors (Fargo) oral history project, "Breaking Barriers: Harvesting LGBTQ Stories from the Northern Plains."
