What inspired your family members to choose FPS across generations? (i.e. traditions, a particular experience, or a shared value):
Because growing up here in Fargo our family came in 1871 and homesteaded and farmed the land. Have a deep commitment to the city. Mainly because Ruth was so dedicated to educating students and helping the blind community. Our family continued to live in the city and received their education from Fargo Public Schools.

How did your time at FPS influence the personal or professional journeys of your family members?
Ruth grew up in Moorhead and went through Moorhead Schools Kindergarten through College. She first taught in a one room schoolhouse in West Fargo. Her first job in Fargo was at Washington Grade School as a teacher for the blind in 1958. Families started hearing about Ruth and her teaching style and soon they were bringing in their blind children from Minnesota and Western North Dakota. World Blind Association was so impressed with Ruth that she was invited to teach in San Fransico and all over Europe. She won lots of awards to include Fargo Teacher of the Year, ND Teacher of the Year, and MSUM Alumni of the Year. She also taught kids how to play piano and enjoyed singing. Her students flourished under her guidance. Race Hoglund is a band and jazz band teacher at Fargo South High School.

In what ways has attending the same schools in FPS created a stronger bond within your family?
Happy we had such a good school system that we could all attend. Having attended several different schools around the area it was so cool how we had good friends and could walk to school. We were able to walk to school and after-school could walk to the school yard to play, go to the swimming pool, or walk downtown to go to the movie theater and get popcorn at Nick's Popcorn Stand. We create lots of wonderful memories and there was always something to do outside. Feel so lucky that we grew up when we did and had so much fun!

Any special memories or reflections that highlight the significance of this shared experience?
It has been good clean fun and a learning experience. All because of the schools, teachers, and the community. It was top-notch!
